Back in April 2023, I had the absolute honour of being part of a truly unforgettable moment in Lindsay’s life—her wedding ceremony at the stunning Asylum Chapel. She has graciously allowed me to bring her beautiful wedding photos out of the archives, and I could not be more excited to share them with you. The love, the history, and the pure magic of this day deserve to be celebrated all over again.
Before we dive in, I just want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to Lindsay and Josh for allowing me to tell their story. And, of course, a massive shoutout to the incredibly talented wedding photographer, Lottie, for capturing these breathtaking moments so beautifully.
Lindsay and Josh at Asylum Chapel – Beauty & timeless elegance
Lindsay and Josh’s London wedding took place at the enchanting Asylum Chapel which is also officially known as Caroline Gardens Chapel, a Grade II listed building in South London. This venue is more than just a location; it’s a piece of history, standing strong since 1827.
Despite its weathered walls and faded grandeur, the chapel is a masterpiece of historic beauty, offering a deeply atmospheric setting for couples who want their love story to be part of something bigger. Lindsay and Josh were drawn to its unique charm—the perfect fusion of romantic decay and timeless elegance—and it’s easy to see why.
A wedding steeped in elegance and charm
From the moment Lindsay stepped into Asylum Chapel, she looked absolutely radiant in her silk gown adorned with delicate lace details—a vision of vintage sophistication. Her ethereal veil trailed behind her gracefully, while Josh’s tailored suit, with its subtle modern touches, complemented her look perfectly.
The ceremony itself was nothing short of magical. Candlelight flickered against the textured walls, lush floral arrangements brought warmth to the rustic ambiance, and the couple’s vows echoed through the historic space. The blend of deep, rich hues with pops of vibrant colour created an effortlessly romantic setting—one that felt intimate, personal, and undeniably cinematic.
Following the ceremony, Lindsay and Josh embraced the striking contrasts of their venue, stepping outside to capture stunning portraits. Their playful spirit shone through as they posed against urban street art, beneath blooming cherry blossoms, and within the grandeur of the chapel’s aged beauty. Their intimate wedding was a perfect mix of old and new, traditional yet modern, raw yet refined—truly a celebration of love in its purest form.
The rich history of Asylum Chapel
For history lovers like Lindsay and Josh, the Asylum Chapel wasn’t just a venue but a place woven with stories of resilience and strength. Originally built as the chapel for London’s largest complex of almshouses, it served as a sanctuary for retired workers and their families.
Interestingly, the term “asylum” in this case meant a place of refuge rather than a mental institution. The almshouse residents received financial aid, coal, and medical care, fostering a dignified community rather than enduring the harsh realities of workhouses.
When the chapel opened in 1827, an estimated 10,000 people gathered to witness the event—a staggering number, considering Peckham was still a rural area at the time. The chapel quickly became a central place of worship, renowned for its choral services and grand organ, built by Messrs Bevington and Sons.
A love story that stands the test of time
During World War II, the Asylum Chapel suffered extensive damage from bombing raids, forcing almshouse residents to evacuate. Though the chapel itself was nearly destroyed, some of its most treasured features miraculously survived, including its stained-glass windows and intricately carved stone memorials.
Over time, the chapel endured, much like the love stories it now bears witness to—including Lindsay and Josh’s.
Its transformation began in 2010, thanks to artists Jo Dennis and Dido Hallett, who saw its potential as a creative and event space. Restoration efforts in 2018 and 2020, funded by Historic England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Architectural Heritage Fund, breathed new life into the building, preserving its facade and historic memorial windows.
Today, the Asylum Chapel remains a sought-after wedding venue, a breathtaking blend of history, art, and raw beauty. It’s also an increasingly popular location for civil ceremonies, offering couples a setting filled with emotion, character, and timeless romance.
For Lindsay and Josh, their London wedding wasn’t just a celebration—it was a moment in history, forever woven into the rich tapestry of this extraordinary space. With the perfect time to capture love stories being any moment spent in a place with such depth and meaning, the Asylum Chapel was the ultimate setting for their unforgettable day.
